Mr. Hughes is a Partner in the Advanced Planning and Family Office Practice Group at Handler Thayer, LLP.  He practices primarily in the areas of Business Structuring, Strategic Business Planning, Income Tax Evaluation, Tax Efficiency Evaluation, State and Federal Tax law, and serving as general counsel or tax counsel for Commercial and Financial Transactions. 

Prior to joining Handler Thayer, LLP, Mr. Hughes was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois, handling various tax planning and business and corporate law transactions for his nationwide client base.  In addition, he previously served as a tax consultant, reviewing, analyzing and implementing income tax planning and wealth management strategies for a variety of entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals. 

He has been involved in various advanced planning and advanced business planning engagements which have served to integrate legal structures and achieve comprehensive tax planning, business planning, estate tax planning, asset protection, and premarital planning objectives that represent global best-in-class structures for both domestic and international private clients. Such engagements have included international trusts, family holding companies, and family offices.

Mr. Hughes earned a Master of Laws in Taxation degree with honors from The John Marshall Law School and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Florida Coastal School of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Board.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Environmental Writing and Literature from the University of Montana.

Mr. Hughes is licensed to practice law in Illinois and is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association.
